"Come, little leaves,"
Said the wind one day,
"Come over the meadows
With me, and play;
Put on your dresses
Of red and gold;
Summer is gone,
And the days grow cold."
Soon as the leaves
Heard the wind's loud call,
Down they came fluttering,
One and all;
Over the meadows
They danced and flew,
Singing the soft
Little songs they knew.
Dancing and singing
The little leaves went;
Winter had called them
And they were content-
Soon fast asleep
In their wintery beds,
The snow laid a coverlet
Over their heads. *

Today God was raking the leaves from the trees with His powerful wind and it rained yellows and reds and browns. Left after leaf swirled and fell as if God had grown impatient at them dawdling on the branches. Behind His fall clean up He dropped a silver haze to showcase the leaves last dance.
And as for us lovers of summer?
We stayed inside and watched as winter tip toed closer.
*This is an old lullaby that my dad used to sing to me at bedtime. "Come Little Leaves" was written by the American poet George Cooper (1838–1927), music by Thomas J. Crawford.

Oh such a cute lullaby and beautiful pictures. Still enjoy reading your blog very much, (even though I am a lazy comment writer ;)
I like all your fall pictures and those pretty colors of the trees, and you look beautiful pregnant in that last post :)
Too gorgeous! We may dislike what's coming, but it's too hard not to admit that there's magic in this transition time. Loooove the power of the pictures after your words!
I like that song...it's too bad the joy of fall is so short before everything is dead and cold!
I miss this song... and June... and fall in Utah...
From grandma-
This is a great post! You've got me singing "Come Little Leaves" - it will probably be stuck in my head for days! You probably know this, but if you don't you should: I sang that song to your Dad and my mother sang it to me, and her mother sang it to her. Maybe it goes back further than that, but that's as far as I know for sure. Laurel and Shellie sang this at Grandma Johnson's funeral in a duet arrangement that your dad did. I think I might still have a copy of his arrangement somewhere. It was really beautiful.
Grandma
Shellie, Amy, Laurel, and I (and maybe some others, I forget now) sang your dad's arrangement of this song at Aunt Karen's funeral too. This song is a sweet family tradition...I remember my mom singing it and I sang it to all my babies too.
