Simple Days

Sometimes I tend to over complicate what I think makes a great day for my kids. And while I know the fun activities and adventures that we go on ARE fun, it never fails to amaze me how the simple days at home are some of the best.

The cat even loves them.

We get to mail letters to daddy.

And wear a spider man shirt with ruby red slippers

And the simplest of them all? Blowing bubbles. What more could a day need? (okay, maybe some cookies too...) But these bubbles are as complicated as it gets for a three and a one year old.

These simple days are truly "the good old days," and our memories will be covered in soapy, rainbow filled orbs.

Get Lost

I picked an item from my date box Buck made for me. I picked the strawberry car freshener. It was for a mini road trip.
So we decided to head south to Clawson Utah to see the “Creativity Museum” where some man made things like UFO's out of junk and scrap metal. I was pretty excited. I had researched some of the local diners in the small town too. It was perfect.

We started out by getting gas and road trip junk food. Donuts and chips. The only way to travel.

We had good conversations and teasings as we drove. We watched the landscape change from green mountains, giant white wind mills, and golden lake reeds into sand and red rock cliffs.

I had the map in my GPS on my phone. I lost service a few times. Between that and the loopy roads in Price Utah, we ended up on the wrong road... for nearly an hour.

When I realized what had happened, and that that made us an addition two hours away from our original two hour drive, I got sad.
The thing is that I immediately knew the right thoughts to have and how to handle it. “Getting lost makes this the PERFECT road trip. That's what it's all about. Getting lost and finding adventure you didn't plan on!” But still... I was sad for a while. I was really excited for that place and now it seemed so far away!

To console me, Buck stopped on the side of the road and forked over 12 dollars for a tiny bag of buffalo jerky that some random men were selling in their trucks. Super creepy sounding when I write it like that but it was legit enough.

And then we were back on the road again.
We ended up stopping in a small town called Helper. It's really cool actually. It's smashed up right against a large orange cliff wall, the buildings made of brick and stone, shaped like they were from the wild west, (and they probably were built back then.) A lot of the Main Street stores were out of business so some parts felt like a ghost town.

But we found a large coal miner statue, (we're talking two stories tall kind of large statue!) and we took a photo with it.

Then we found the one and only restaurant and went there to eat. It turned out to be rather surprising because inside it was kind of new and nice. Not fancy, but cool. It was an open two stories with a wrap around balcony on the top floor.

Before we left with our food, we poked around the main street and took some photos. We love small towns and I could have spent all day photographing this place if I had the time.

I ate and then I switched Buck driving so he could attempt to eat his giant hot dog that was covered in relish. We laughed a lot as he attempted that and as I drove like a crazy woman. I like when we laugh together.

So I can't complain! There WAS adventure to be found in getting lost. Sometimes I need reminders about the lessons I've already learned. And hey, now we still have a destination to pursue one day! Next road trip, maybe with the girls, we'll make it to that UFO museum. Or maybe we'll get lost. Either way, I can't wait.

Cotton Candy Trees

For the life of me I can't focus on driving these days. There are too many pink and white trees everywhere! I want to look at them all. I find myself swerving a little here and there, drunk on these cotton candy trees.

I couldn't stand it anymore so I threw the girls in the car and went driving around, taking photos from the car. A "drive by shooting" I like to call it (har har har.) I'm sure this did nothing to help my swerving, unfocused driving.

And look at this tree! A TREE! With giant flowers that bloom every spring. Not little poofs but a whole bouquet hangs on these branches.

After capturing it all in photos I feel more content now. So here's hoping for safer travels. Until Fall hits, them I'm distracted by the colors on the trees all over again...
