I had all these plans for June's first birthday party. And all these plans involved my backyard and our big tree. So when the day came and we started putting up the decorations and it started to rain- yeah, I was a little sad. Then it started pouring rain. For a good hour. Seriously? Hasn't rained like that all summer. Turns out it didn't rain anywhere else but our yard. All the party guests were surprised when we told them.
But Buck came to rescue. He had the idea to put the stuff up in our carport. Not the most picturesque place but better than our living room. My dad and Buck worked hard and fast to get it all up. Honestly I was still a little sad. The weather ended up being perfect once people got there so we could all still hang out in the backyard, which was a blessing. But having all the stuff in the carport threw off the flow of things and made me a little sad that everyone was hanging out in an undecorated yard.
I kept reminding myself that there are starving people in the world, wars, and all sorts of horrible things. The fact that it rained on June's birthday was hardly something to be sad about. Especially since Utah has needed any rain it can get this year with all the fires. It was a blessing, dang it. But still. I felt a little sad despite my logic and perspective.
Later that night Buck said, "What if God made it rain because maybe I would have otherwise fallen from the tree as I was decorating?" It was true- he had to be up pretty high on a precarious ladder. And who knows if that had anything to do with the reason. Sometimes there is
no reason for the things that happen. Either way it reminded me that God is in all of this, all the time. Even if it's just to give my attitude some exercise.
In the end the party was super fun and we could not have asked for more. So, now onto the picture overload!
June had the Harrison traditional birthday morning coffee cake, which she loved.
And loved playing with her balloon. We decorated the house a little bit too.
Here tis. The carport! Oh and the theme I tried to have was a cloud theme...
I actually made the cake! And my sister made the poofs for the top.
We were able to make cotton candy clouds thanks to my friend Kenzi getting a machine for free from her work!
We had cake, cloud cupcakes, grilled cheese (in could shapes) and water melon- her favorite foods, and then a jello cloud thing.
In the backyard we set out blankets with baskets filled with drinks and cutlery and napkins and bubbles.
June was the center of attention and she loved it.
When it came time to eat the cake she was very dainty at first and then just ended up digging a nice little pit into the cake.
Good thing I was there...
We also played that game where you set out four things and the item the baby chooses reveals their future career. I know there are more tradtional things with this but we choose our own:
President of USA
Marine biologist
Astronaut
Musician
It was pretty funny. She walked up to them. Looked them all over, pointed and then made her choice.
Marine biologist!
She was spoiled with presents.
And the party was a success!
I could NOT have done it without my mom who came for the party! And thanks to my dad helping put everything up. Thanks to my sister helped out making decorations and Kenzi of course for the cotton candy machine, and Carrie for making cupcakes and loading up a bunch of things that we couldn't end up using and for all her ideas and planning! And thanks to everyone else who helped and came and loved June.
And of course Buck- who helped in every way possible.
And thanks to June for being here and being the reason to celebrate!
