The second week after we moved into our house we were surprised to find a carnival around the block, next to the library, in the neighborhood. What luck! I had no idea that every city in Utah has a week festival, usually with a carnival, so I was elated to find such a party so close to us. And now, six years later, we've made the walk almost every summer to the AF Steel Days carnival.
This summer was our last walk.
Hazel longingly looks on at the prizes
Hazel was hot and tired and kept wandering off, unaware.
But thanks to her dutiful sister, she was saved.
But here's the best story of the day.
It was hot and nap time. But Hazel really REALLY wanted to play
some duck game to win a giant stuffed .... HOT SAUCE bottle. Like,
what on earth? There were turtles, bears, butterflies, and all other
sorts of cute stuffed animals but no- she had her heart set on the
hot sauce.
And that was so random that I had to make her dreams come
true. So I ended up forking out a good 15 dollars so that Hazel could
pick the winning duck. June also got involved and determined she
needed a pink unicorn cat and so we won her that as well. Hazel
sleepily wandered off down the sidewalk hugging her prized hot sauce
saying, "My hot sauce. My hot sauce."
Never has anything ever represented their personalities so well
and summed them up in a single stuffed item. Hot sauce and a pink cat
unicorn. Hazel and June.
I hope there's a carnival in our new town where we're moving. But if not, or perhaps regardless, we may have to turn our walk into a drive and come visit our little carnival every summer.
And maybe next year Hazel will win a large stuffed mustard bottle?
