Socially Unacceptable

The other night was a welcome dinner at BYU for the new grad students.

creative title for the night eh?
It was this night that I was reminded how out of place I always am, but even more so around a bunch of smart people getting higher degrees than me. And in more substantial areas than Sociology. They probably wouldn't have to spell check the word "substantial" either like I just did. Yeah, that's embarrassing to admit, but whatever. There it is.

We started the night out with name tags. Buck's had a lengthy title under his name and mine was blank. Just white paper. They even printed my name at the top of the tag as if to show that there was an empty space below it. Don't worry, I filled it in myself.

And how did the rest of the night end up? Oh, you know.

-The girl to my right was getting her doctorate in Law. She laughed at me when I asked what the "JD" stood for on her name tag. "Jurist doctor. A doctor of law."  Oh yes. Silly me.

-I never understood why people are afraid to eat the bread ON the table. Is it not there as something to munch on before the meal begins? Why else would they put it there? (It's like how people say it's "rude" to walk on grass. Well then why the devil is it there? It's grass, not roses.) Out of a good thousand people in that room I was the first to eat it. Before any prayer, before any speaker, before dessert even. I'm a wild woman, let me tell you. The guy next to Buck was relieved that I had broken the barrier of manners and before I knew it everyone at the table had a roll and butter. Who needs a master's degree anyway when you can feed people by breaking social norms? (The only thing my degree is good for it seems.)
(Also, I love to start clapping at silent times during plays. The whole audience always follows and soon everyone is clapping. Brilliant. haha. *sigh. okay, moving on.)

- I also used my fingers to pick up my chicken. Because it was stuck to a thigh bone.

- Miss Doctor of Law stared at me, appalled, as I salted my meal. (So I like a lot of salt... sue me)

- AND The room was so cold that I put the cloth napkins over my arms to try and keep in some heat. I looked ridiculous. (but not as ridiculous as this)

These are the reasons Buck can't/shouldn't take me anywhere. But these are the reasons he says he does.

Anna.
Entertaining or a menace to society?

I think each one of these sentences is a reason that I married you. Innovative, check. Breaking social norms, check. Know how to use a spell checker, check. (except the salt, you'll die young)

(Yes, this is two posts in two days)

Anyone else put 'Mom' on their tag. I bet there were a few people smiling and agreeing with you in their minds. Hey it was a dinner for new Grad students and how ironic that you are a new Mom.
