One day God forgot to hang the clouds up high in the sky so they sunk low, wandering free. They wanted to explore the mountains they so often viewed from above so they crept along the slopes, whispering past the golden trees and tickling the pines. Misty ghosts swaying in an autumn cot.
I knew I needed to go there and see what was behind those cumulus curtains.
Just the girls and me.
------
As we drove into the canyon the clouds started to close in and
rain began to fall. The grey sky caused the fall colors to burst. We stopped up on a peak at an overlook and got out. It was only
sprinkling and we could see the dressed up slopes from peak to bottom
slide down together forming the slot we had just driven up, their
long gowns of reds and yellows reaching to the road. Wispy but large
clouds came strolling in below us, hugging the mountain sides as they
came. Hazel said they were ghosts! And then BOOM! Huge thunder
crashed and the girls giggled with delight but came running to me. It
started to rain more. We went back into the car until it passed again
and then we got out, this time with my peacock umbrella. And this
time it started to hail. We caught some of the icy pebbles in our
hands and giggled some more.
And I wished with all my soul that somehow the girls would
remember that moment, that they would remember ME in that moment.
That is who I am and the mom I want to be/hope I am. Taking unplanned
but important trips up a mountain to chase a storm and see the hazy
fog. Being thrilled by thunder and humored by hail. Taking simple
sips of life, wondering at the world God created for us, no matter
how many times you think you've seen it, always taking time to see it
with new eyes. It's a beauty and a wonder! And I just... hope that
they can remember it, somehow.

Bonus: two posts in one! ;)
A couple days later it seemed the fog had taken an extended stay in the canyon so I talked Buck into a morning drive with all of his girls.

Buck's photos:
I am happy Buck was able to also go and experience the eerie calm before winter completely wraps up the land.

Your beautiful view is why you're one of the most beautiful people alive.
If they don't remember, they'll have lots of beautiful pictures to remind them.
Beautiful words and photos. I have never thought about those clouds looking like ghosts, but now I will forever think of them this way :)
Ahh, this is gorgeous and I loved the video with the girls' reactions! I feel like they are very similar to Charlie and Miles and it makes me sad they haven't seen each other in over a year. We went on a hike today and I was so disappointed that everything was still so green except for a handful of brown leaves already on the ground. I guess Utah does have some very beautiful parts ;)
Loved your poetic description. Those are again some stunning colors.
I think they will remember...especially when they see the pictures! You do so many fun spontaneous things with them that I am sure they will remember their mom that way. :)
They may not remember specifics about all you do with them but as everyone has said the pictures and feelings they had will remind them what a great mom you are.
