Eat Like a Pilgrim

When I told one of my friends that I was going to a dinner event at Thanksgiving Point called "Eat Like a Pilgrim" she said, "So you're all going to be starving and then the Native Americans are going to come save the day with a bunch of food?" ..... And while the event perhaps wasn't quite that accurate, it was well themed night.

The whole place inside was surrounded in corn stalks.

Don't even ask me what face I'm making, but here I am amongst the corn, all pregnant and stuff.
Before dinner started we were able to go around and see displays about the pilgrims, a small model of the Mayflower, animal furs, old dishes, and drink goats milk (yuck!) while sampling snacks like corn kernels and biscuits. There was a goat and turkey there too, just hanging out. They also had very festive and appropriate music playing the whole time. Who even starts a pilgrim band? I don't know but there was one there. There were also many old games and Buck and I settled the question of who's the best at a marble game. (I won, naturally.) There was a solider and he kept putting people in the stocks for crimes such as women in pants and father's not tending their children. The stocks continued on through the night and every time someone was announced in it we all had to cry out "Shame! Shame!" haha

Once dinner started they began with a Puritan prayer and psalm song (and only in Utah did nearly everyone bow their heads and close their eyes instead of watching the man act out the prayer. haha!)

The food was good! Corn pudding and a pumpkin hash with cider and bread. Then they had some men go and pretend to shoot some turkeys and we had that and some pork. Dessert was a yummy berry cobbler. Not too shabby.

The whole thing was pretty entertaining and we made friends with everyone at our section of the table. At one point they brought in the Wampanoag tribe and they made corn husk dolls for the kids and gave out oysters and eel to eat. Then there was a tug of war game and some pilgrim dancing, of which Buck and I happily participated.

I've never really done much for themed events at Thanksgiving time but I'm glad we did this! It was fun and silly and very filling for our bellies. Also, now I am on the hunt for pewter dishes. I MUST have them.

Thanks for taking me Buck! And for spending your work bonus on the tickets. And for getting embarrassed when I pinched your rump while dancing like a pilgrim.

You should show this blog to thanksgiving point then they can pay you and they can use it as advertisement! By the way My 8-greats grandfather came across on the Mayflower and was the Governor of Plymouth Rock. He is given credit for starting thanks giving. His name was William Bradford. Did they talk about him at all?
