Its become my ritual for sometime now to lay out on the floor every morning that the sun shines through my window (God willing). I can tell before I even open the curtains. Either their colors illuminate in silver wonder or, what I hope for, they glow golden and warm. I can't sleep when they're golden. I have to wake up and open them, exposing the sun's goodness onto my carpet, bed, couch, wherever it may fall. And wherever it falls, I fall. And I just lay there. And my mind wanders... sauntering into memories of summer, onto beaches- into Hawaii.
Warmth.
I was extremely blessed to be able to spend a summer in Hawaii as a visiting student at BYU-Hawaii in 2006. I am grateful for the longing I have, how deeply I miss it, because it means that I was actually there. I spent my time being a 20 year old free spirited blond- living in my swimming suit, staying up all night and all day, and "scandal-ing" my way through (as we came to call it)- don't worry, mostly tasteful scandals, mormon scandals, if you will. The close friends I made there all know what I mean. ;)
| This was never actually a good idea... |
But I am so thankful that the sun even comes through my windows. And I'm thankful for the chance I had to go back to Hawaii for my majestic honeymoon.
And for all the many beaches I've been blessed to see and be warm at.
But I will forever have a chunk of my heart left on those islands.

oh man, i feel like my heart broke a little more seeing these pictures...but you put it so well: the longing means it really happened. i've been back as well and you know what? it wasn't the same. amazing, yes. unforgettable, of course. first trimester morning sickness this time, constant. :) but the way we did hawaii was definitely a once in a lifetime experience. i think it's because of the scandals. especially the ones which are probably not best to reminisce over with our husbands present...(is that all of them?)
anna whatever happened to our plans to go back and sail on the canoe like pirates?
We must have ESP because not only an hour ago I was talking to my friend about how we wish our husbands would go to school in Hawaii. What's better than spending a few years in the sun and skipping the winter?! I can't think of anything!!
Love the pics, brings back so many "scandalous" Hawaiian days--especially camping on the beach. Remember how SOMEONE (I wont say who) peed all over my flip-flop during said adventure?? Haha. Or how we trespassed onto the Pearl Harbor bunker and stole some papers from inside (oops. I think I still have them too). And what a time we had with "Merlin"!
Know what else I miss?? Dip-n-dots. Those were glorious. And tons of international friends (African society, Fijian society etc) and snow ball ice cream, coconut syrup, Matsimotos, the CAF, watching all the Polynesians eat massive amounts of food in the CAF, spear fishing, pretending like we could surf, having to evacuate the beach because of shark sightings, Uncle Bill, our ancient self defense teacher (forgot his name), how everyone laughed at us crazy palongi's (sp??), fresh pineapple, begging for hair dye money at the grocery store, flip-flops and short weather everyday, good tans, Kam highway and the "55", prank calling people on the "55", seeing some of the weirdest people on the planet on the "55", singing Hawaiian songs, and last but not least the white sandy beaches of Hawaii.
Honestly, I think we should round up the old Hawaii girls and go back for a week.
love it. wish i could be there right now.
Audrey, its never too late to go back and fulfill our pirate dreams.
And Kathryn- hahaha we begged for money at the store for hair dye?! AND stole papers from the bunkers?! My pregnant mind forgets so much! We were nuts! Remember Polanga? ;) And I have so many incriminating photos of you- and movie clips. Keep a sharp eye on facebook.... ;) And yes, lets get a girls week together. Heck, Amy is still there.
Oh I miss it!
Frank was living in Hawaii when we got engaged. He offered to fly me out there to visit. Silly practical me...I wouldn't go because I was in the middle of a semester at school! But he has promised me we'll go there together someday. We have this crazy idea that going next year for our 20th anniversary would be great. But Scott will be starting college next year...so the finances probably won't be able to handle it! Poor planning on our part...we should have thought of that when we decided to have a baby 2 years after we got married, that this child would be turning 18the same year we have our 20th anniversary! :)
i just about died when i saw that picture with me in it! i was SO COLD with just my towel and lame mat that night! haha!
your pictures are so pretty! it's funny i live here and i still gawk in awe over the beautiful scenery! i think you should blow up your favorite or most beautiful pictures real big and put them in a "happy room" or just around your home! create your own little gallery! which is one of my own life dreams!
