The first full day of our Nevada camping spring break, we went to the main place we came for- Cathedral Gorge State park. It’s hard to describe exactly what it is or looks like. Let me try but then check the internet. It’s like these rock wall formations but they are made of weathered and worn mud. They ribbon around themselves and form slots you can explore and little cluttered tea pots stacked upon each other that you can climb up. Almost like someone took a section of Bryce Canyon and shrunk it down and turned it more pale for a movie set and then put it in the middle of nowhere Nevada. Here is what the website actually says:
"Cathedral Gorge State Park is located in a long, narrow valley in southeastern Nevada, where erosion has carved dramatic and unique patterns in the soft bentonite clay. The park’s beauty began with explosive volcanic activity that, with each eruption, deposited layers of ash hundreds of feet thick. Great walking trails abound for exploring the cave-like formations and cathedral-like spires that are the result of geologic processes from tens of millions of years ago."
So we did a little hike through the small canyon and then came back and explored around and climbed all over, like true mountain (bentonite clay) goats, and had a grand time. I loved how brave the kids got climbing to the top. They had a blast. They also got Junior Ranger badges to add to their collections. Also we stopped at one other spot but the girls were too tired and lame to get out but Buck and Johnny got out with me and we discovered this super crazy and deep cave! So that was cool.
