We went to the windmill/old historic place called Zaan Scheans- a tourist place but done right. They moved true historic buildings to recreate an old Dutch village around the already existing windmills. Lovely paths to walk around. Green cottages and windmills right on the water front. Farms nearby. Not too crowded. An old weavers shop, cheese, (goat lavender cheese!) chocolate, antique shops, first ever grocery store (from 1800’s) and an old clog making workshop. The windmills were the highlight for sure! We got to go into them and even up in the platform of one! Very cool. One mill grinds paint pigments. Another makes flax seed oils for the paints and another chops timber. Very cool to see and that they keep them running.
