First Trimester- Story Time

Dramatic photo, Maine 2015

I never thought I'd end up with four kids, or a "big family." I grew up with one sister. And in fact, I'm not sure I ever thought too much about my future in general. When I was younger everything seemed like such an adventure but one that I didn't have full control over. Things like college I knew my path but when it came to dating, marriage, and starting a family, I honestly had no idea either way if I'd ever find "the one" and if so if we'd even be fertile or what would happen or how many kids? But had you asked me straight up how many kids I hoped to have, I probably would have said two or three.

Then I did meet my one and only and I did get married! Who knew?!

But there is no way to tell this story without adding in my very strong belief and relationship with God. I'm very religious and so when it comes to family matters, I feel that God's plan is the best plan and we've tried to stay close to Him through this life to best know what steps to take.

I figured we'd take a good year or so of being newlyweds before having a baby but then, a couple months in, we felt we were to stop birth control and BOOM. June was conceived the next month.

I was scared to be pregnant and give birth but over all I was excited and bewildered that I was going to start the journey of mother.

There was never a choice in my mind after that if we would have another child or not. I yearned for June to have at least one sibling to love and fight with.  But after severe postpartum depression, I was TERRIFIED to do it, but when I was ready enough, we were lucky to get our Hazel!

My pregnancy with Hazel was awful, yet the whole time I knew in my heart that I would be pregnant at least one more time. And the next time we wanted the kids to be closer together so we got pregnant when Hazel was about 18 months. But that lead to a miscarriage, and that lead to it taking longer to get pregnant again.

But then Rose came! Being pregnant after a miscarriage is not super fun. You hold yourself back from being happy, thinking you are protecting yourself from further pain and hurt. It's a mind battle. But regardless, we wanted Rose very much and were thrilled to have her with us!

But then. Rose was a newborn. And I felt so unsettled. I didn't "know" if we were done or not, all I knew was what I WANTED. I wanted to be done. And I wanted to KNOW that. I had postpartum depression again after Rose. And I kept hearing friends say that they were done having kids because their mental health couldn't handle it. That seemed true for me too! But yet other friends would talk about how "you just know when you're done. There is something there and you know it."

And I didn't know it.
And that made me upset.
But God kept teaching me, humbling me, whispering, nudging- in very personal ways. And before Rose was even out of newborn stage, I knew and finally admitted that we were NOT done. There was ONE more. Buck felt it too.

Why did I even have to be thinking of this while Rose was newborn anyway?! Couldn't I wait to cross that daunting bridge till later? But looking back, I was the most humble and ready to listen at that time of life, so I know I needed to hear it then. Because then the months went on and Rose was not super easy (not super hard either but not easy like she had been as a newborn) and three kids was NOT easy, and as the time went the more my heart hardened. And it may have hardened, see, but the truth was already inside of it so there was no going back.

But I thought, "well fine then! But I am going to wait a while!" Because life with three kids had me drowning! DROWNING. I was a hot mess mom, the one they make memes of. The one people look at and judge in public. The one where friends keep tell me how to parent and give advice that I didn't even ask for. The one with no control. The one who cries a few times a week at night because she is failing everything in life. NO WAY was I ready to take another weight with me into the deep end!

But as nursing ended with Rose and it was time to figure out birth control... the prompting was clear. Don't prevent this- Move forward with faith.

And so we did and BOOM- it happened so fast! I cried with fear when I took the pregnancy test!* And I feel horrible about that, man, let me tell you. This kid is probably like, "Great! I'm getting jipped! My mom is crazy!" But you GUYS! I am not skilled enough for four kids! I am going to DIE!!!!

DIE!!!!
Okay, okay, deep breaths.**

But God has been so good, despite all my fears. With all three other pregnancies I was so sick and it was awful. But this time? Aside from an awful week of influenza, I haven't been sick or nauseous at all! And it's been wonderful! (but also made me paranoid something must be wrong, ha) I had no idea being pregnant could feel so.... normal. I FEEL LIKE I WON THE LOTTERY. I've had three ultrasounds already and every time as I'm looking at a REAL baby, I honestly question if they are actually grabbing those images from MY belly or not. I'm not sick and wasn't I just here doing this pregnant thing like a year ago? But I guess there must be a baby in there because my belly is really starting to get huge.

And it's jarring to cry so many nights because I feel like I'm failing the three girls I have and then to remember there's another baby coming. I feel like a fool! I marvel that so many women have done this through the history of the world and had even more than this- and they lived through it! I used to look at people around my age who had their fourth babies and I thought that they must be experts by that point. Well if any of you think that way then do not look over this way because I am no expert, that's for sure! haha

And to find out it's actually a boy! We didn't think it was possible! haha. And everyone is all excited for us to "finally" have a boy but I was kind of hoping for another girl because I know girls! I don't know a thing about little boys! I'm honestly scared and I think I need therapy to be ready for this new adventure. ;) I was so excited for Buck to have a son though, so so excited. He's never been one to only wish he had a son, he has been thrilled with his daughters, but I know there is something special between and mother/daughter and a father/son. I've started calling Buck and this baby the "book end boys" since Buck's the oldest and this little guy will be the youngest. It makes me feel better because otherwise a boy at the end of three girls seems off balanced. But whatever, he's going to have FOUR moms and he's going to be extra awesome because of it. ;)

So anyway, that's an overview of it all. Yes, all that rambling and it's only the surface of thoughts and emotions that have gone into this. I had no idea how personal and intimate the decision to have another kid could be between a couple and a person and God. But man alive, I do now! Ultimately I am deeply grateful at this chance to make a choice that shows how strongly I believe in God and my purpose here on earth. If I wasn't sure or had any doubts- I would not be doing any of this! But I know God lives. He knows me and He has a plan for us and our family and this little boy is a huge part of that- so onward I go!  Onward we go. Further into this tangled beautiful mess of a life.
Maine 2015

(*This is all so scary to share, btw. I know how it can come across. "She's selfish, being upset about a so-far healthy pregnancy when so many others are struggling to even get pregnant once! Or even get married to start a family!" I get that. I do! But I've had to come to accept that everyone's trials are different. And typically our greatest blessings are also our greatest trials. And I think it's a good thing when we can all share what we're going through and be okay if that's different for each of us. And it is possible to be grateful for your blessings but also scared for them haha.)

(**In summation- it's not that I don't want another kid it's that I don't think that I can handle another kid. I don't think I'm "good enough" or skilled or capable. But I am trying to have faith that God can strengthen me.)

Wow, I could relate to this post on so many levels. We are a lot the same in some ways, but different in others. I actually thought a lot about how many kids I wanted to have as I was growing up, and growing up in a family with 8 (9) kids, I was sure I wanted to have a lot of kids. When Frank and I were engaged, I told him I wanted to have a big family, and he said "Me too. About 4 kids." I laughed, because to me, 4 kids was a small family! I was thinking more like 6, or maybe even 7 if I got really adventurous. Well, we ended up with 4, which was not by choice but like you said--Heavenly Father has a plan for our families, and His plan is a good one. I wanted more, but I'm thankful I got four. For the longest time I thought we'd only have 3. We always thought we'd have a girl at the end, and even though I'm at peace with that, it does still hurt my heart that I will never experience the mother / daughter relationship from the mother side. People used to always say things to me like "I'm sure you want a girl so that you can dress her up in cute clothes and stuff" and that would really annoy me because even though yes--that would have been fun--that is NOT why I would have liked to have had a daughter. (That's what granddaughters are for...hahaha!) Hopefully someday my boys will get married and then I will have daughters in law and hopefully one of them will love me enough to let me move in with them when I am old and my mind is gone! But anyway, I am happy for Buck that he gets to experience the father / son relationship, and I am happy for you that you get to experience the mother / son relationship because it is totally awesome and you will love it!! It's okay that you are terrified, I promise you will love it!! Boys just adore their moms. I was not an expert and I was far from a perfect mom and I didn't do all the awesome cool things with my kids that you did with yours and my boys STILL adore me! Your son will adore you, too!

So, I could also relate to being pregnant after a miscarriage not being fun because I was a basket case for my last pregnancy (at least at first). I was also miserably sick with all of my pregnancies (including the one I miscarried) but not with my last one. It was totally awesome to be pregnant and not miserably sick except that yes--I was terrified that meant something was wrong. Especially since the pregnancy I lost I was really, really sick and then suddenly started feeling better and then that baby didn't make it and I realized that's why I started feeling better when I did. So I was sure something was wrong, but thankfully it wasn't--I just wasn't sick for some reason that I can't fathom but wow, was it nice for a change!!

I guess I should write my own post about all of this since my comment is almost as long as your post! Sorry!! Like I said, I really truly understand a lot of what you are feeling. Don't be too hard on yourself--you are doing an amazing job as a mom--much better than you think you are!

When you said you were feeling awesome this pregnancy I said, "It's because it's a boy!" I only was able to have one pregnancy and he made me feel so good. I exercised and slept and thought that pregnancy was no big deal! Especially as I watched all my friends who were pregnant with girls be so dang sick. Anyway, I like that you call Buck and baby your bookend boys. They will have so much fun together. We just got back from China, adopting a little boy, on Saturday and my husband is so obsessed with his two boys. There is nothing like watching that relationship. You'll love it!

YoureY doing great and you will continue to do great. The atonement makes up for all our mistakes at least that's what I am counting on! Parenting is very humbling and exhausting. But can have the greatest rewards. Stay close to the Lord.💕

I love this for so many reason, first of all, I just keep thinking of how many women a post like this will help. You articulate so well, what many women experience but can never put into words....And I can relate to everything you said...(minus the being pregnant with a 4th thing...it's not my time....yet....and I'm terrified for when that time comes...which brings me back to how well I can relate to this post.) You and Buck are really such incredible parents and those children are lucky to have you and each other. Also, I'm not sure if it was intentional, but I'm guessing it was, that you used your Maine photos, which if I remember right, was when you were pregnant with the sweet baby that you lost. Anyway, we just love you guys...and thanks for paving the way as a family of 6!

This made me cry. I love you and I’m so happy for you Anna. You’re the best mom I know! I mean that sincerely... sometimes I wish you could be MY mom
FOUR KIDS. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Amanda Seely Mitchell
I think you’ll do great! It’s a tough decision. I was kind of scared when I found out I was having our daughter after two boys, but love the new dynamic she brings to our family and wouldn’t change it for the world. Yeah. I hear you on the overwhelmed thing. When our kids are all home it’s crazy in our house! I would probably be open to having more kiddos but husband is definitely done and I’m ok with that. I just think that this is just a season of life, a challenging one, that also has an end and will be over before we know it, and then we’ll miss it.

I can totally relate to this. 3 kids was good for me. Heavenly father said 4. Then he gave me 5 even though I was so so scared. #5 is an angel. An angel straight from heaven(well, they all are.) Heavenly father knew I was gonna need this angel baby to get through the hardest challenges and trials of my life. He has been my sunshine when skies are gray. Anyways, this is about you, not me. You have a good relationship with our Heavenly Father and therefore , you can do this!

Anna Harrison No it’s not just about me! This is about all
Of us getting through this life and I love hearing everyone’s different stories and perspectives and in fact, your comment really lifted me up!

Well I can tell you that little boys are SO sweet, and they really really love their Mama's. You are in for a treat ( although I can't compare with what girls are like). I too can really relate to your words.

Hooray for book end boys!

My first is a boy then two girls. He is such a sweet little helper and likes to tease. It can help ease the dramatics from the two girls and mama

My first two are 20 months apart. I too got pregnant three months into marriage. When my second was 18 months I felt there was a third. My hubby wanted to be done due to the hardships of pregnancy mentally, emotionally and physically it is for me. We took it to God and my hubby felt good about my desire. We got pregnant basically right away.
But I too kept questioning if there was a baby inside even though my belly was growing. The pregnancy was so.... well nice! I actually enjoyed eating and enjoyed life.
But due to sever anxiety at 7 months with my third, I said, “no more! I am done! I have to be done!”
After basically a two day labor (I was in denial) I finally gave birth to my third. The second she was placed in my arms I thought, “I want another one” Seriously! I just gave birth and I want another one!?
Well time passed. I still craved a bazillion babies. Then we found ourselves pregnant. We were excited. But then it ended in a miscarriage. I was confused. I figured it was due to the anxiety meds I was still weaning off. I was also sad.
Things keep pointing to 4. And a sense that by 2019 there may be a fourth! Aggg! But I’ll be 39! The same age my mom was when she had me and my twin.
So who knows?

Thank you for sharing. It’s made me more open to being open about a fourth.
I too drown with three kids and feel like I’m an awful monster mommy. A lot!
I love my babies. They are so yummy! But it can be a lot.

You have got this Anna. You can and will do this.

Ari’s pregnancy was a breeze, minus the fact I wanted to punch anyone who gave me a side eye.
But let me tell you, he’s my sunshine and laughter. He literally makes our home a brighter place.
And you do just know when it’s time. You’ll feel as if the w...See More

Thank you for sharing Anna. Love you and your amazing family you are creating!!!

I had my first and knew when she was 10 months that there was another. My first two are 18 months apart. The second and third are 21 months apart. I, too, struggle with postpartum after each pregnancy. I had 3 kids ages 4 and under. I thought I was going to die. Ben was almost 4 when I started feeling like it was time for another. I was terrified! I was dealing with my worst bout of depression yet and didn't feel mentally stable but I KNEW God was telling me to get pregnant, and he wouldn't be telling me to if I couldn't do it. So baby #4 came. and now she's turning 4 and what do you know? I'm still feeling more babies in heaven. (Heaven help us) I'm so excited for you Anna. You are amazing and are going to do just fine. With a wonderful husband, sweet little girls and an all powerful Father in Heaven? How could you not be? :)

Anna Harrison
That last line got me good. Thank you ❤️

Hailey Steele Johnson
Boys are so freaking wonderful! I mean, ALL babies are. But boys...OMGoodness....they just GRAB Momma's heart and BOOM....never ever to get it back again!!!! Your kids are SO lucky to have you as a mom. <3 <3 <3 <3

Emily Miller Hemming
I agree with Hailey. The bond between mom and son is pretty wonderful. I have 3 little boyfriends.

Erin Pew Stewart
Ditto. You already know. But I was terrified of a boy. Now I can hardly handle how much I adore him, sleepless nights and all. My little man!

Solana LaJolla
You are probably not going to

DIE!!!!!!

You are so neat.

Amy B. Pew Crane
You can do this, Anna! I couldn't imagine what a boy would be like after two girls, and it was amazing!! I'm so grateful I have gotten to have both sons and daughters because the bond between you definitely feels different. But both are equally incredible in different ways. I had hard pregnancies and hard babies, so it was always difficult to have another one, even though I so so wanted them at the same time. I know that even though children can be the source of some of our greatest challenges, they are definitely also our greatest blessings. It still hurts that I didn't get to keep my last two, but I can tell you for sure that Heavenly Father really does know what He's doing. He also knows we can do way more than we feel like we can. I know you will be so very blessed for having the courage to do what you know He wants you to do.
